Malaria

Our group has an interest in understanding the heme detoxification in malaria and have recently determined a likely structure of the heme/chloroquine adduct (Chem Comm. 2014,50,13765). We are currently following this breakthrough up with projects involving the preparation of new antimalarials and characterization of the intermediates in the formation of malaria pigment, the structure shown below.

Finally in collaboration with groups at the Institute of Parasitology at McGill and in Cameroon we are developing new probes for the nematodes which cause river blindness and related helmith illnesses.
